Your Kids Quality Of Life When Overweight

Many parents worry about the health of their children with the current childhood obesity crisis. Children are also at a high risk for being overweight or obese children and currently, 30.1% of guys and 25% of girls, both under the age of 18, are overweight or obese. Using BMI percentile charts, a child is considered overweight or obese if they are above the 95th percentile.

While being overweight comes with significant long-term health risks, these children typically experience a lower quality of life than normal weight children.

One of the most frustrating aspects of being overweight as a child is not feeling well. Carrying around excess weight tires children down easily and causes joint pain as well as regular can't playshortness of breath. Kids may not be able to play normally and feel tired even after a short amount of physical activity. Additionally, overweight and obese children receive a huge negative effect on mental health and development. Kids who are overweight may feel uncomfortable with their bodies and struggle with maintaining a positive body image. They may experience periods of depression, anxiety, or other mood swings related to their weight. When around other groups of children, overweight children often feel ostracized and may be bullied on a regular basis.

It’s not easy having child obesity, but most kids don’t understand how to achieve a healthy weight. Without help, they may turn to unhealthy eating habits, extreme food restriction, or take on other habits to become the size they think is normal. Because children can’t usually help themselves completely, they need help from parents, caregivers, or others to achieve and maintain a healthy weight over time.

Parents, caregivers, and healthcare providers can help children with weight issues by having an open and honest discussion about weight, growth, and development. Kids are often uncomfortable talking about their weight, but may be willing to discuss ways that they can become healthier.

In most cases of obesity in children, it’s a good idea to set small goals such as exercising on a regular basis and eating more fruits and vegetables, lean proteins, and whole grains.

Kids should be responsible for setting their own goals and deciding what changes they want to make, without feeling pressured.

meal prepTo help kids meet their goals, parents and caregivers should focus on creating a healthy environment. When kids are growing up and developing their habits and patterns of behavior, this is a great time to encourage participating in exercise and building a healthy diet.

Kids should be involved in meal preparation and choosing healthy foods on a regular basis. It’s also a great idea to make exercise a family event, with fun outings and other activities that the entire family can enjoy.

Finally, parents can help overweight children by focusing on the positive. Instead of talking about restriction, have open discussions about the benefits of exercise and healthy eating. By putting a positive spin on these changes, kids will be more motivated to improve their overall lifestyle and work towards achieving a healthy weight over time.
