So Much Knowledge About Obese Kids, So Little Progress?

Well, when it comes to obese children, statistics have it all. According to the CDC- Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, by 2012, around 18% of children in the United States were obese, compared to just 7% in 1980. The story reads the same in adolescents who had increased to 21% from 5% during the same period. These undoubtedly, should be and are shocking statistics on overweight children. They reflect a grim future where diabetes will be an outbreak, by all standards.

obesity knowledge

What do we mean by obesity?

In simple terms, this refers to having excess fat in your body. It happens when you burn way less calories than you consume. However, you need to have a doctor determine whether your child is really obese. The doctor will calculate the child’s BMI- Body Mass Index by measuring their height and weight and comparing it to what is set as standard. The doctor may also need to look at the child’s growth patterns.

The root of obesity in children

Where exactly is the problem on obesity in children? We may blame diet, lack of exercise, or even genetics. The experts cite behavior patterns, the environment, as well as genetics. In rare cases, hormonal imbalance may also cause the same. Obese parents also cause their children to follow suit, as they will model after their eating habits.

The consequences of childhood obesity

There are serious health risks that an obese child is exposed to. These children are susceptible to cardiovascular diseases like high blood pressure. They could also develop a condition referred to aspre-diabetes‘. The levels of sugar in the blood indicate a higher likelihood of developing diabetes. Such children could have joint and bone problems, as well as sleep apnea. Worse still, the other children who are of normal weight, could ridicule the obese ones causing them to have a low self esteem.

Child Obesity victims could also suffer from skin problems like heat rash, acne and fungal infections.

Obese children are more likely to be obese when they become adults. This increases their chances of developing various cancers like colon, esophagus, pancreas, thyroid, cervix, breast, kidney, ovary and prostrate, and many other types.

play outsideHow do we alleviate the situation?

We need to ensure that our children eat healthy foods and exercise, and train them to take up these good habits. Allow them to play, not video games, but let them go outside and play with other children, or with their dog. This helps burn calories as opposed to playing video games, where the child is physically inactive. When it comes to diet, all family members should change their diet, so that the child may not feel singled out.

As parents, you must let your child know that you are ready and willing to support them. This acceptance will raise their self esteem. Allow them to share what they feel about their weight.

All in all, there are more obese children today than there has been in history. It is a worrying trend, globally. It is upon us parents and families who have children to ensure that they do not become overweight children. If they already are obese, it is possible to reverse the situation.

We can change the grim future that childhood obesity can result in.
