Detrimental Causes of Overweight Children

The number of obese children worldwide has increased tremendously. This is a disturbing fact especially for parents and guardians. Childhood obesity facts state that children tend to have not only health related complications but also social problems. As such it is important to explore and understand the causes of childhood obesity.

Unhealthy eating habits

At a given age, a child should have a certain weight which is considered normal. However obese children have a weight which is higher than their age and height requirements. Fun things like gardening, caring for pets and cleaning can be delegated to children. If a child does that then he or she will be able to burn a few calories and feel useful at the same time. Obesity also comes in when a child rarely walks. Walking is a simple and natural physical activity a child can partake of. Instead they are carried in cars everywhere, whether going to school, or shopping. Children should be able to walk short distances as long as the weather is friendly. Children spend most of their time indoors watching television and playing video games.

Though rare, certain ailments may cause childhood obesity. For example hyperthyroidism which is characterized by a deficiency in the hormones that control metabolism. Other medical conditions that predispose children to obesity include the Cushing’s and Prader Willi syndromes. Children with Prader Willi will tend to feel hungry always as it affects the part of the brain that regulates hunger.

Inadequate sleep

Sleep is crucial to the overall growth and development of a child. When exploring the causes of childhood obesity, sleep should not be under looked. Children should sleep a minimum of 13 hours. If a child gets less than the recommended amount of sleep then fatigue sets in. fatigue is known to interfere with the hormones that regulate appetite. A child with appetite disorders will eat a lot.

Prevention is better than cure. Childhood obesity prevention should be given more attention. This is because return an overweight child to his or her normal wait is an uphill being activetask that comes with so much pain. Parents should lead their children in the right direction in an attempt to fight obesity. Help children avoid crazy lifestyles, encourage more physical activity and allow them more hours of sleep.
