The Diabetes Syndrome in Your Children

With the current bad eating habits that our kid’s indulge in, there are more prone to suffer from serious health conditions such as the type 2 diabetes. In the cases of childhood diabetes, identifying such conditions at an early stage is beneficial to the child as one is able to prevent these conditions from reaching acute stages which are very difficult to treat.

Type 2 diabetes – what is it?

Type 2 diabetes is not to be mistaken with juvenile diabetes. Type 2 diabetes is a medical condition associated with high levels of sugar in the blood. The condition affects children’s glucose/sugar metabolism and occurs when their bodies develop are resistant to insulin therefore unable to regulate normal blood sugar levels.

The condition may have diverse effect on a child’s health but when noted early, this condition can be minimized to avoid serious complications. Below are some symptoms you should look out for when you suspect your child is suffering from type 2 diabetes.

Type 2 diabetes symptoms in children

*Increased thirst and frequent urination

As excess sugar accumulates in your child’s bloodstream, fluids are pulled from his/her body’s tissues through osmosis (movement of fluids from low concentrated areas to high concentrated areas). This leaves your child feeling thirsty therefore making the child drink a lot of water. This eventually results to more urination than the normal.

*Increased hunger

With insufficient insulin to move sugars into your child’s cells, your child’s muscles become depleted from nutrition and energy hence triggering more hunger.diabetes symptoms

*Weight loss

Despite eating more to relieve hunger, your child may still lose weight. In addition, hunger and lack of energy shrinks will shrink his/her body’s cells, fat stores and muscle tissues.

*Fatigue

When the child’s cells are deprived of sugar and energy, they tend to become more irritable and tired.

*Blurred vision

With increased sugar levels in the child’s bloodstream, fluids may also be pulled out from the eyes’ lenses therefore affecting your child’s ability to focus.

*Frequent infection and slow healing sores

Type 2 diabetes may also affect your kid’s ability to heal wounds and to resist infections.

*Darkened skin

Acanthosis nigricans (patches of darkened skin) may also be a sign of insulin resistance. Most dark patches are usually seen to occur around the armpits and neck region.

*Obesity

Obesity is one of the causes of type 2 diabetes. If you child is suffering from obesity, there are high chances that he/she may be suffering from this condition.

If you notice these symptoms, it is highly recommended that you visit a doctor for testing and start early treatment. Failure to do so may result to more serious complications.

Consequences of type 2 diabetes in children

However, some children with diabetes may not show type 2 diabetes symptoms. This may increase the chance of the child from suffering from serious health conditions. Some of the serious conditions that emanate from type 2 diabetes if it is not treated include;
